Video Gaming Is Not a Couch Potato Sport Anymore

May 1st, 2009

Jay Brandley asked:

Many people think that video games are not a healthy recreational hobby for children, or anyone for that matter. Video games are associated with television binging and being a couch potato. Being sedentary is not a healthy lifestyle. However, the gaming and video game console scene is changing and incorporating a much larger measure of physical activity and exertion more than ever before. Let us consider some gaming examples that support the statement that video gaming is not a couch potato sport anymore. Yes, there is an uprising in the making. The twenty first century has spawned a new wave of gaming concepts. Physical activity and video games are merging, thus making it a bit more appealing to those who are aware and conscious of their health.

Movement and Video Games

There exists certain video games that require more than sitting down and pressing buttons with your hands while your eyes are fastened tight to the television screen. It is becoming a trend these days for children to become couch potatoes. These children stay at home a lot and sit for hours in front of the television or computer. However, because of the stressing of the importance of physical exercise, gaming has been slowly being reinvented with exercise in mind.

For instance, take the video game Dance Dance Revolution. This video game requires a complimenting dance pad where players are required to jump and move and land on certain parts of the dance pad according to what the directions are on the screen to get points to win. This game requires constant motion and movement, so players are not sitting down but rather they are getting some physical activity.

To add to this, the Nintendo Wii uses sensory technology and incorporates it into their new concept of video gaming. All video games require motion and reenactment on the part of the players, and therefore these players are also constantly in motion.

Although just playing video games that require physical movement is not enough to keep a person healthy, it is a great step towards making exercise fun, and curing the debilitating couch potato disease. In a way, video games that require movement is a really great disguise for physical exertion and a great way to get your kids to be a little more active than usual. And it is not just for kids, because although many adults will not admit it, they enjoy video games just as much, if not more, than kids. So take a small but focused step towards getting yourself healthy and substitute your traditional couch potato gaming for video games that require movement.

Japanese Nintendo Wii Games Offer More Gaming Selection And Choices For The Slow Summer Months

March 29th, 2009

Steven Fields asked:

As seems to be the nature of things in video game releases, the summer time is almost always the slowest time of year. It’s been this way since the days of the Super Nintendo system (and the corresponding system from Sega, the Genesis). The trend looks to continue this year with the Nintendo Wii. So what is an avid gamer to do once they’ve finished all of the current games in their collection?

While many games often have great replay value, playing it on a different difficulty setting, or playing it in two player mode with a friend. We’re often left wanting an waiting in the summer time for new game releases. Going to your local Blockbuster or EBGames to buy another new game is simply not an option.

This is where import games come into play. While state side we’ve run out of games to buy (and play) and wanting for more, there are a whole slew of games being released (or games that have already been released) in Japan and Europe, that are sure to keep you busy during the slow summer months here in the USA and Canada. You can certainly keep yourself busy and playing without having to rely on the release dates for games here in North America. And while we can safely assume that all games from England and Europe are multi-lingual, meaning that they have an English option available. Even many of the Japanese games that have been released offer a full gaming experience simply because many of the prompts, words, information screens are all in English.

It’s important for me to point out however that even with all of these great games coming out in Japan and Europe while we’re dealing with the slow down in game released here in North America, you can’t just pop these games into your Nintendo Wii and expect them to load. You’ll need a Nintendo Wii Mod chip like the Wiikey or the Cyclowiz> or one of the many other Wii Modchips on the market today. This is because the Nintendo Wii, like the Playstation 2 and Gamecube before it, has region coding on their games. Much like a DVD movie that is meant to play in a certain region of the world, video games are also the same. So if you want to play a Japanese game on your North American or European Nintendo Wii, you simply won’t be able to do it without a mod chip.

With all of the mod chips on the market now for the Nintendo Wii, you’ll have no problem picking on that’s suitable for you, and being able to play it right away. Don’t be afraid of installing a mod chip, they are easy to do, and require fairly little skill as far as soldering goes. You won’t regret the 20 - 30 minutes it’ll take you to install it - the rewards are far to great. Being able to expand your software library by hundreds of games right after you install your Nintendo Wii Modchip.

Konami, Hudson and Tecmo are preparing new games to be released on the Nintendo Wii in Japan. These game are slated for release in either June or July. here are just a few of the many Nintendo Wii Import Games you could soon be playing.

First to the plate (okay, the pun IS intended) is Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball Wii. This big headed baseball game from Konami is similar to the PS2 Version that is available already. The Wii version will however have an exclusive “REMO PAWA” (remote power) mode where you would use the Wiimote to swing and pitch the ball, making for a truly interactive game experience. On a side note, I have always thought that sports games would benefit the most from the way we play games on the Nintendo Wii - and this game shows that perhaps I may have been right. The release date is July 19th for this game.

The next game will be an action game from Tecmo. Though no details have as yet been released for this game, it is, as said by the famous Famitsu game magazine in Japan, a good, and much needed action game for the Nintendo Wii. While it may seem a but mysterious that there aren’t any additional details, this is often common in Japan - even when the game is just a month from being released.

And finally, the last of the the games in this article is a jigsaw puzzle game (yes, jigsaw puzzles on the Wii CAN be fun you know!). Entitled Jigsaw Puzzle Kyou no Wanko, which roughly translates to Jigsaw Puzzle: Today’s Dog in English. This game features jigsaw puzzles based around the popular (in Japan anyway) Kyou no Wanko segment that airs early mornings on Fuji Television in Japan. While it may not be your next first person shooter - it can offer several hours of party fun with your friends and family (and a great way to show your parents that you’re actually using your brain while playing a game too). The release date for this game is set at July 29th.

Nintendo Wii Backwards Compatibility

September 16th, 2008
nintendo wii
Mark Dale asked:

It recently struck me when talking to friends that not many people know that the Nintento Wii is backwards compatible with the Gamecube, and even includes connectivity for the Game Boy Advance. Nintendo Wii Backwards Compatibility is not all plain sailing though as this article explains.

When the Nintendo Wii was introduced, one of the main advantages of the console for many gamers was the fact that it could play Nintendo GameCube games too. With backwards capability, you can use all GameCube games and accessories on the Nintendo Wii. However, there are a few slight problems which you will have to take into account.

The Potential Problems of Playing GameCube Games on the Wii

The main disadvantage which comes with playing GameCube games on the Wii is that you cannot always save your game. So you could be doing really well on a game but you cannot save it and so you would lose everything you had just done. This is especially a problem with adventure style games which take quite a long time to complete. If you would like to be able to save your game then you can always purchase a Nintendo GameCube memory card. That should allow you to save any GameCube game on your Wii.

If you do want to play GameCube games on your Nintendo Wii then another thing that you will have to purchase is a GameCube controller, if of course you don’t already own one. Obviously the controllers for the two consoles are completely different. This means that if you attempted to play a GameCube game with a Nintendo Wii controller, it simply would not work. So you do need to ensure that you have some of the GameCube accessories before you use the games on your Wii console.

Another advantage which comes from the Nintendo Wii having GameCube ports is that you can also connect a Game Boy Advance as well as an e-Reader. However again you will need accessories to be able to use this and for the Game Boy Advance you will need a Game Boy Advance Cable.

One thing that also may be a problem is that since the firmware has been updated to 3.0 the console may now not be completely compatible with the GameCube Action Replay feature. This works with GameCube games and so you may experience some problems when you do try to play various games designed specifically for the GameCube.

Finally the Wii will not be compatible with GameCube composite video, component video cables and S-Video due to it using a proprietary port.

So there are some negative things that you have to keep in mind when looking into using the Nintendo Wii for GameCube games. Overall though, it is definitely an advantage that you can play GameCube games on the console. It means that anybody who has previously bought a GameCube before the Wii will be able to still play the games on both consoles. It is easier than having to keep switching between the two machines and the graphics are also really good when playing on the Wii too.

Overall Nintendo Wii Backwards Compatibility is a great added benefit to an already excellent gaming system.

A Cheap Nintendo Wii - How to Find One

August 27th, 2008

Gabe Killian asked:

So you are looking for a Cheap Nintendo Wii Console, or maybe just some Nintendo Wii Accessories. This article will show you the best places to find these items at the price you are looking for. Now before we begin, know that the product you are looking for is in hot demand. Nationwide, the Nintendo Wii game console has become such a rarity that they are close to non-existant in the non-internet retail world. Below I will attempt to give you some tips for finding the Wii you are looking for at the price you want.

1. Fish where the fishes are. What is meant by this is that in order to find a nintendo wii, don’t just go to places you think they might be at and make a trip to your local Walmart or Fred Meyer. Go online to a website that specializes in selling video game systems such as the Nintendo Wii. By doing this you will gain an unfair advantage over others searching aimlessly, hunting and pecking through the crowded lines asking the sales clerk the same question thousands have asked him before.

2. Don’t be afraid to buy second hand, but be aware. If you really want a Cheap Nintendo Wii and you don’t want to wait, this may be a great option for you. Most people decide to sell their wii because of two reasons:

A. They tried it, and it wasn’t for them, so they decided to sell it.

B. They bought it for the sole purpose of selling it and want to make a small profit.

People aren’t in the business of selling broken nintendo wii’s. Nintendo wii systems are very durable and they sell better when they work. Most often a person wouldn’t risk their reputation by selling a bogus unit.

3. Read the fine print. If you are buying second hand on somewhere like ebay or craigslist, be sure that you know exactly what you are buying. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, if they aren’t answered, then you probably don’t want to buy the product. All too often someone buys a product on ebay and they find out they bought the "case" of something rather than the actual unit. Simply stated, read what they are selling.

4. Go to websites that directly deal in selling Cheap Nintendo Wii consoles or Cheap Nintendo Wii games. If they specialize in it, there must be a reason. And chances are, they will have product to back it up.

5. Be educated on the product. Become a professional at whatever it is yo decide to buy. Visit online forums, read articles and get a good idea of how much an item like this should cost. Determine just how much you really want to pay for your Cheap Nintendo Wii product. The more you know, the better decsions you will make along the way.

These are just some simple ideas to ponder when buying a Cheap Nintendo Wii Console, Cheap Nintendo Wii Games or Accessories. If you are looking for an excellent price, make sure you know what you are buying and whether or not you’ve thought it through enough to make a wise buying decision.
