So, the guide you purchase needs to contain high quality, detailed, written, step by step instructions with lots of pictures.

3. Does the guide include videos? I am a visual learner and videos really help me. If the Xbox 360 repair guide contains videos, this is a bonus for me. But the videos could have been shot with a cell phone. So, the question really is, does it have high quality videos? The guide you select needs to include high quality videos that show every step clearly and compliment the written instructions.

4. What if I have questions? Does the guide come with support? The Xbox 360’s manufacturer spans more than a couple of years now and not every Xbox 360 is the same. So, I want to be able to ask somebody a question if I get stuck. You need some kind of support. It could be chat, email, whatever, but, you need to be able to talk to someone and ask them a question.

5. How is the guide available? I need it now so I can fix my Xbox 360 right now! The most instantaneous method would be down loadable pdf instructions with access to the videos on line. The guide you purchase has to allow for instantaneous access immediately after you plunk down your cash.

Good Changes in Pell Grant Program

The Pell Grant program stands to gain about $2.6 billion to help lower income students. This will allow the total grant to increase, though the cap may not go as high as you’d like for the max award. Increasing the award will help keep pace with inflation, thought most people would like more. Obviously, more free money helps more people go to college, right?

Bad Changes in Other Financial Aid Programs

Actually, the term changes doesn’t quite cover it. One proposal shows 47 programs ending. By ending these programs, including the Perkins Loan program, the government can redirect that money to the Pell Grant program. All 47 of these other programs total $3.3 billion per year. That’s a lot of student loans. Of course, many aren’t loan programs. One was a program to help teachers of public schools teach certain subjects. It started out at $276 million. It wasn’t eliminated, but now the program has only $2 million. Ouch.

Student Loan Subsidies Cut

Congress also has cut the subsidy rate for federally guaranteed loans. The government pays lenders who loan according to their program. This subsidy keeps the program working, and keeps the lenders loaning to students that need the funds. When the rate drops, lenders have to reevaluate their budget. By dropping the subsidy rate, smaller lenders get squeezed out of the market. And that limits choice.

Sallie Mae, the main student lender, has tightened their lending standards based on the subsidy change. By changing their lending strategy, you will probably see fewer students receiving student loans through the lenders that stay in the federal programs like Stafford and Perkins. Do these changes affect you? Depends. If you get a Pell Grant this year, the changes may not have any affect. Also, more needy students may receive a grant. If you plan to get a Perkins Loan or another student loan, you may have challenges. By lowering the subsidy on these loans, the banks lose income and may loan less, or to fewer students.

Banks that choose to leave the market for student loans due to changes in their income structure can still loan to students by way of private loans. These types of loans don’t have the federal guarantee, and have a higher interest rate. They may also have similar payment plans to the Stafford or Perkins loans. Consider them another option for your college money, and shop around to get the best deal. While not the same as a federally backed student loan, they still can help you finish if you have problems with your other sources.

Other Ideas that can help

Do your best to keep your credit clean as well, to prevent any problems getting a private loan. Don’t miss payments, and don’t over borrow. As an added idea, consider a tuition assistance program from an employer. If you have a job with access to a tuition assistance program, or tuition reimbursement, use it. That kind of program can see you through financial difficulties.

Keep your book expenses low with used books, shared books, and even selecting classes that don’t require the $150 book. I know of one personal finance professor who teaches his class using just the book The Millionaire Next Door, a cheap book you can buy for under $10 used any day on Amazon.

The net affect appears to decrease the number of students that will receive aid. That can lower students entering or finishing a degree. Drugs that treat high blood pressure are either short-acting or long-acting. The former won’t control blood pressure throughout the day. To do this, you have to increase the dosage or take it several times a day.

In contrast, long-acting drugs can control your blood pressure much longer much longer or as much as 24 hours. You simply take one tablet at the prescribed time each day and get on with your life.

At first, doctors thought it didn’t matter whether you took one or the other. After all, both of these drugs lowered blood so what more could a physician ask?

However, recent studies show that not all antihypertensives can protect you from the complications of hypertension even if they lower blood pressure. While short-acting agents can make your blood pressure drop, the effects of these drugs vary greatly throughout the day – like a Ping-Pong ball bouncing up and down. Obviously, that’s to be expected when you’re playing Ping-Pong – but not when you’re treating hypertension.

These concerns were aired during the 16th Scientific Meeting of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) in Glasgow in the United Kingdom. Dr. John P. Chalmers, ISH president, said the “Ping-Pong effect could lead to a rapid fall in blood pressure (hypotension), tachycardia (rapid heart beat), and other cardiac problems.

Elliot of the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at the Gardiner Institute in Glasgow who said that short-acting drugs don’t seem to offer any protection against overnight hypertension and the subsequent rise in cardiovascular risk during the waking and early working part of the day.

This is bad news for people with hypertension since those with greater blood pressure (BP) variability appear to be at higher risk for end organ damage, according to Dr. Gianfranco Parati, associate professor of cardiology at the University of Milan in Italy. Parati said that the more your BP varies throughout the day, the greater your chances of suffering from cardiovascular complications.

To avoid this problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that drugs used to treat hypertension should not only lower BP but, more importantly, prevent fluctuations in BP which appear to be related to cardiovascular complications.

Because of their limited affects, short-acting drugs don’t meet these criteria. The FDA also warned against the use of high doses of short-acting antihypertensives to maintain smooth blood pressure levels for 24 hours since this could counteract the benefits of lower pressure.
