The PlayStation Experience

Jonathon Hardcastle asked:

A few months ago a friend entered my apartment to announce that he has decided to perform a very important investment for our future in entertainment. I remained calmly at my sit waiting for him to continue and explain how lucky he was as he managed to find an incredible deal over the internet for the newest version of PlayStation 2. Frankly, I could not believe my ears. I have never played PlayStation in the past and the last video game I have played with my friends when I was still a kid, was an old version of Atari. I could not grasp how someone over twenty-five would pay any amount to become another of those inert players stack in front of their TV screens for hours or even days. But the experience I had when PlayStation 2 entered the premises of my house was not exactly as the one I originally imagined. PlayStation has proven to be an extremely fun and instructive gaming experience. After the first couple of weeks I realized that when someone knows how to keep a balanced life it is possible to spend time exploring this unique gaming experience without the feeling of guilt.

Produced by Sony Computer Entertainment, PlayStation 2 is the successor of the original PlayStation console that has been a tremendous worldwide success since its original introduction. By March 2005, the sales margin of PlayStation surpassed the 100.49 million units, becoming the first home console to ever reach the threshold of 100 million sold games. Dated back to 1986, Nintendo was the first to attempt to work with disk technology, but after encountering a number of problems Nintendo decided to approach Sony in order for the second to come up with a solution. Soon Sony recognizing the emerging video-gaming market planned to initiate production of its own console, leading Nintendo’s management team to cancel all deals and form an alliance with Philips; this time securing control over its licenses on the Philips developed machines. By the end of 1992, Sony and Nintendo reconciled their major differences and Sony launched the first version of PlayStation in 1994 in Japan. By September 1995, PlayStation was introduced to the USA, European and Asian markets and its initial success was a prelude of its future sales breakthrough challenge.

The extreme popularity of the PlayStation console introduced the term “PlayStation Generation” and titles like Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, and Silent Hill, have become the favorite pastime games of millions of users worldwide. Having enjoyed over eleven years of continuous videogame production, Sony has announced that the next PlayStation generation, known as PlayStation 3, or PS3, will be launched in November 2006 and will also be a backward compatible device; meaning that it with be able to play all the games that have already been released for the other PlayStation versions.

Although the genius creators of the PlayStation consoles argue that the new version of this popular videogame will advance the user’s experience, I doubt that it will actually manage to have the same success in the desired time frame. A vast variety of other videogame competitors, including the powerful Nintendo, have launched a number of games for their consoles, which have increased users’ expectations and have made them extremely conscious regarding their next videogame choice. But, I am sure that my friend and I will continue playing the PlayStation games of our choice, like NBA 2K6 or Grand Theft Auto, as PlayStation 3 will be outside our budget for at least a while.

Raise your Game: Table Tennis Tips for Beginners

April 7th, 2009
table tennis
Robert asked:

Do you want to get better in playing table tennis? Well, it is going to be a little easier with these helpful table tennis tips and tricks:

1. Keep in mind that table tennis is not a game of the hand and arms alone. When playing table tennis, you need balance, coordination, and good reflexes. Move your feet along with the rest of your body. When played right, a single table tennis match can give you a good full body workout.

2. Handle mistakes positively. Table tennis is a fast game. And committing mistakes is rather common. If you fumble a lot, don’t get mad. Rather, learn from it. Remain positive and concentrate on improving your skills rather than being frustrated about your game.

3. Use the right grip on the paddle. There are different kinds of grips when playing table tennis. Use the one that suits your style best. The shake hands grip is the most common beginner’s grip. To do it, you merely hold the paddle’s handle as if you are shaking hands. Hold the paddle with the right tension so it stays in place. Practice your shots using the grip until you get comfortable with it.

4. Master the basic strokes. The basic strokes are the forehand block, forehand smash, and their backhand counterparts. Forehand block is the strategy used to block the ball’s path with the racket. There’s really no action with this stoke. All you have to do is to intercept the ping-pong ball with the paddle. On the other hand, a forehand smash stroke is just like a forehand block, only more powerful. Instead of merely blocking the ball, you are supposed to put more force to the shot.

5. Know your abilities. Don’t attempt to use techniques and strategies that you are not familiar with inside a match. It is impossible to win a game with a tactic you haven’t mastered just yet. Be realistic when it comes to your abilities. Accept your limitations. Beat your opponent with the skills that they lack, which you have incidentally.

6. Join a table tennis club. If you really want to raise your game higher, play with other people of varied expertise level. You surely will learn a lot from the pros. And you can fine-tune your skills with fellow beginners. Playing with others expands your horizons and broadens your experience, as far as table tennis is concerned.

Play Fishing Games, Should You?

April 1st, 2009
virtual games
Edward Chen asked:

Avid fishers would always have that urge to fish every once in a while. If they fail to fish for a long period of time, they’d feel that they are missing something very important in their lives. Fishers miss the ocean. That’s a given. They feel as if they have to answer the calls of the waters. This is why they enjoy packing all the things they need for a fishing weekend and travel great distances to get to the most secluded fishing spot. But then again, not all seasons are fishing season. At certain times of the year, fishing spots are closed. And these are the hardest times for fishing addicts. And so they try to look for alternative ways to fish.

Such alternatives can come in the form of fishing games. If you can’t possibly enjoy a real deal fishing spree, at least you can turn to your computer to provide you with a similar experience. While it is true that no computer game can match the excitement and thrill you can get from the wide blue waters, it’s a good enough alternative when the fish are out hibernating.

Play fishing games during the off season. These games can keep your fishing mind and spirit active. There are hobby fishers that actually forget about their hobby within six months of being deprived of the waters. But real fishing enthusiast would stop at nothing to continue with their hobby. They would have to qualms fling to remote fishing areas of Canada, Alaska, or Costa Rica just to follow that hobby. Travel fishing and fishing vacations can be very expensive. If you don’t have the money for it, you might as well invest on a good game console and a popular fishing game.

Through it, you can play fishing games off season or otherwise. And right at home too. Just think of this as your other pastime or a practice to make you do better in the waters the moment the fishing season opens. Note that most of the fishing games sold today can be very realistic. They use good simulation software that can hone your fishing skills. You can even learn an entirely different technique through it if you only try. These virtual games can teach you everything you need to know. It would feel like you’re really in the waters and not in front of a monitor. With fishing games, you can learn the theory before you practically do it.

Fishing games can practice your reflexes and your coordination. While you are not really over the oceans, the experience is relatively the same. The games circulating today are created to give you the best possible feel of the water with their animated graphics and realistic views. If you really want to fish, you might as well learn the basics from your computer rather than reading all about it. A good book is informative enough. But books are not interaction-based like a computer game. Besides, playing is more enjoyable than studying.

Everybody can play fishing games. Beginners and professionals would definitely enjoy such games. These games are best played whenever the fish are out and the fishing spots closed. You can also enjoy a game or two whenever you’re bored at home.

An Overview of Three Popular Internet Games

March 29th, 2009
arcade
Daniel Millions asked:

In the mood for a stylish logic game? Check out Bloxorz, an interesting and fresh foray in the puzzle genre. In it, you control a rectangular prism that needs to get inside of a square hole. While this premise may seem simple, complicated terrain, varied switches, collapsing blocks, and the ever-present threat of falling off of the board impede you at every move.

The levels in Bloxorz start off simple and progress into the mind-numbingly hard. The fact that the block you control is a rectangle makes it difficult to maneuver through tight spaces and you’ll find yourself plummeting into the abyss quite a few times. The game never feels repetitive, though, because you eventually get into the mindset that you NEED to finish the level. It’s challenging but not insanely so; it gets fairly easy to complete after you get the hang of it.

In short, Bloxorz is a very stylish and professionally made game. Even if you don’t normally like puzzles, this is something you need to check out, there’s nothing else like it out there. A friendly warning, though: don’t play Bloxorz if you don’t have much spare time because you’re going to want to ride it all the way to the end.

Bubble Shooter: Reminiscent of puzzle games like Bejeweled, Bubble Shooter is an interesting way to pass some time. In the game, you control (obviously) a bubble shooter that fires different colored spheres. Your goal is to destroy a wall of multicolored bubbles that advance quickly upon you by matching up groups of three spheres before they reach the bottom.

The gameplay is quite amusing and offers lots of strategic options. You can bounce the bubbles you shoot off of walls to get better angles for your shots as well as get combos. Because bubbles that aren’t attached to anything automatically disappear, building up groups of bubbles that can be taken out with one shot is satisfying. Shooting is just as hard as it should be, presenting an experience that’s easy to get into but hard to master.

The sounds in the game are perfectly suited for it. There’s a gratifying series of cartoonish pops when you knock out a huge combo and a nice “whoosh” sound for every shot fired. Overall, Bubble Shooter is a hard yet fun experience, presenting something for all gamers to enjoy. If you’re ever in the need of a good time-waster, look no further: Bubble Shooter is what you need.

Raiden X: Based on an older series of arcade games, Raiden X is a fast-paced and frantic scrolling shooter. In it, you control the “Raiden Supersonic Attack Fighter” whilst battling hordes of enemy aircraft. Five main powerups exist in the game, including various kinds of lasers, missiles, and bombs.

Gameplay consists of flying through levels while trying to avoid death. This can be caused by many things: kamikaze pilots, bullets, and running into a wide variety of other planes. Hundreds of missiles can proliferate on the screen at once, creating a frenzied atmosphere that engrosses you in the game.

Your own arsenal of armaments is nothing to laugh at either, with multiple upgrades available for each weapon. Another cool feature of Raiden X is the boss battles at the end of each level. These are particularly challenging and have some cool surprises and twists in them that keep the game fresh.

Raiden X keeps the formula simple: shoot baddies, fly around dodging bullets, and collect upgrades and powerups. This, combined with great explosions, nice special effects, and fitting sounds, makes Raiden X a true winner. If you like shooting stuff and having fun (as most of us do), then try out Raiden X, you won’t regret it.

Tennis Elbow - Injury Treatment Information and Advice

March 29th, 2009
table tennis
Matthew Hick asked:

Tennis elbow can be a painful debilitation soft tissue injury that affects more than your ability to play. The best way to treat tennis elbow is by using the R.I.C.E.R. treatment:

Rest:

Resting any injury is essential before beginning a more intensive physical therapy treatment - tennis elbow is not exception. It is imperative to take a few days (or even weeks) off the court before even attempting to get back in playing shape.

Ice:

Ice is a wonderful way to reduce swelling and help your injury to heal faster. Muscles and tendons have the tendency to swell when injury, thus creating a longer recovery time. Keeping it well iced before and after treatment and exercise can help alleviate some of your discomfort as well as shorten your recovery time. Keep in mind when using pain relievers to treat your injury to avoid aspirin, acetaminophen, and other fever reducers. Instead use something with an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen, to keep the swelling down.

Compression:

Keep the swelling down as well as alleviate the risk of further abuse and strain by keeping your arm and wrist tightly wrapped.

Elevation:

Your body does everything it can to help you heal faster, including sending blood to the injured area. Unfortunately the amount of blood flowing to your arm is at a minimum, thus reducing further discomfort.

Referral:

Tennis elbow may not sound serious, but it can be worse than just a nuisance. If left untreated it can lead to more serious problems or increased injuries in the future. See a doctor for the best treatment options.

Serious tennis elbow is a direct result of Repetitive Stress Injury, (RSI), making it very important to treat it immediately, followed by a slow, and gentle physical therapy routine a s advised by your doctor.

Be careful not to overdo any strengthening exercises. If you work the tendons and muscles before they are ready, you can make your injury worse - much worse.

Some simple exercises to try (with of course the approval of your doctor) are:

1: Holding a dumbbell in each hand while sitting down.

2: Laying your forearms down your thighs.

3: Be sure that your hands are hanging over your knees.

4: Your palms should be facing upwards.

5: Begin by curling the weight upwards at the wrist and lowering slowly.

Or …

1: Try squeezing a ball in your hand.

2: Hold the ball firmly as possible (momentarily) before releasing.

Remember, recovery may be slow depending on much you’ve injured the muscle and tendons in your arm. Some injuries only require a few days rest, while others require professional physical therapy for the best results. Now’s the time to be patient. You’ll be glad you were when you’re finally back on the courts pain free.

When it comes to cricket the whole world turns berserk. Cricket is a game of passion, watched and played by the passionate people. With the arrival of computers and internet access, keeping in touch with the game has become easy. These days one comes across many websites that offer information on cricket, including online games and other virtual stuff. Stick cricket game is one such virtual game that is gaining popularity on daily basis. It is one of the best ways to get thrilled.

The cricket fans want to be connected with the game in every form or way and this makes them happy. Online cricket games like stickei cricket game is great fun. It has actually developed cricket into an internet phenomenon. In fact, there are many versions of stick cricket game available on the cricketing websites. The latest version of stick cricket game has human batsmen. The version 1 which actually builds the foundation for the second version or version 2 is extremely hard to find on the internet. Other versions of the game include an official version i.e. Mousebreaker that featured 7 or more levels through which the fan could play as an England team player. Yet another version of stick cricket game available on the internet is FreeWorld Group that features the Australian team.

The various other versions of stick cricket games include the series of Version 3, 3.1, 3.2, 4, 4.1 and 5. The stick cricket game includes 12 teams, though the USA was replaced with a fictional team. There have been minor changes as well as regular updates, such as the inclusion of three different modes like Knockout Tournament that is based on the ICC Champions Trophy format; the all-star slog where the fan can try to get as many runs as he or she can in 10 overs; and the Practice Mode, where one could practice 10 overs against a particular style of bowling like fast bowling or any other style. In fact, the version 3.2 added more graphics in the main frame and features a new Head2Head Ashes game, including a different stadium - Lord’s. Stick cricket game is also played with a different kind of ball i.e. red with seam and offers a variety of bowling actions. It has also added new features around the site, such as office leagues and some general leagues. The version 4.1 of stick cricket game also features a live commentary for international matches and photographs can be uploaded on the game.

Well, the boon for the cricket lovers is Version 5 that was released in 2007 and allows the fans to create their own stick cricket game team. Currently, it features Bermuda, Scotland, Ireland, Netherlands, Canada and self created teams. One can also play with left handed batsmen. Hence, one can say that stick cricket game is a new development in the world of online or virtual cricketing games. Stick cricket game is a better way to play online cricket and get bowled over again and again though virtually.

Top 3 Instructional Table Tennis Dvds

February 21st, 2009
table tennis
Mario Churchill asked:

It’s had to say exactly what makes a “best” instructional video, but from my standpoint it’s simply this: the video has to be able to get it’s point across and teach it’s viewers in a simple fashion that can be easily understood. If a video gets too technical and elaborate, often I find that it’s just a “master” seeking to impress people with his “skill”. The best instructors don’t necessarily need to be the best players; they DO need to be the best teachers, able to impart knowledge and make sure that it sticks. To that end, here is a brief list of my 3 favorite table tennis DVDs that I’d recommend for any aspiring table tennis player.

Killerspin Success in Table Tennis Series - this set of DVDs comes as a package deal and is a keeper for anyone’s video library. The chapters are seperated across beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels of play so that you can find references for whatever degree of skill you’ve got. The videos get straight to the point with very little unnecessary elaboration. It’s approach generally takes three steps: demonstrating a move, showing WHY it works and HOW to use it, and ending with a drill that helps you develop it. The video series is very holistic, and even includes sections about how to determine good equipment, taking care of and repairing your gear, and general body drills for any level to improve reflexes, timing, and footwork.

Table Tennis Master DVDs - this series of DVDs take a completely different approach to instruction, and is a poor choice for beginners but a great buy for intermediate to advanced players seeking to improve their game. The main reason why it’s a poor choice for beginners is that the Master Series DVDs don’t focus on HOW to play effectively. Instead, each video in their series dedicates itself to a single technique of table tennis, then goes on to expound on that technique. It’s extremely detailed, including many exercises for a given move, how to develop that move, ways and times to use it, and how to apply it singly or in combination with other techniques. If you already play table tennis and want to develop a weak point, or turn your strongest technique into a “killer” move, this DVD series might offer the solution you’re looking for.

Carl Hardin Table Tennis Training Shortcuts - this is something that any table tennis player can benefit from. It’s focus is NOT on teaching you how to play effectively, but on how to TRAIN effectively. Instead of focusing on demonstrating techniques, the video shows a lot of simple but effective training methods that improve your game. Techniques are covered briefly in an “application” fashion, showing you HOW the improvements you get from the demonstrated training method help your different game-moves. This video works for players of any level, helping experienced players by sharpening their game and giving beginners a solid foundation from which they can build their own arsenals.

The reason these three form my “favorites” list is because their varied approaches to teaching table tennis mesh wonderfully with each other. The first set is complete in and of itself and works for any level of skill, teaching all the necessary moves for any level. The second focuses on polishing and mastering individual moves. The third, on the other hand, focuses on training techniques that, taken with the knowledge about move execution from the other two videos, can boost any player’s performance immensely.

A History of Paint Ball Gear Sites

February 11th, 2009
ping pong
C R Ellsworth asked:

Modern Paint Ball guns were a natural progression from a ‘Ping Pong Gun’ that was used by many young ‘Warriors’ in the 1950’s. This ‘Toy’ would fire Ping Pong balls under air pressure. A hit wasn’t as painful as a modern unprotected ‘Paintball’ hit, because of the deceleration of the very light projectile.

Then the Daisy Manufacturing Company of ‘BB Gun’ fame came up with the first Paint Ball Gun. The first Paint Ball gun was invented (1970) and patented by a Daisy Employee, James Hale (U.S. patent 3,788, 298 issued on January 29, 1974.) with the original intent of use by the Forest Service and ranchers marking trees for harvest and cattle for selection. The first gun actually designed for playing Paintball was the Splatmaster invented by Robert G Shepherd. This U.S. patent number 4,531,503 was issued to Shepherd on July 30, 1985.

The Forestry version (Nel-spot 007 pistols) was used in a game of ‘Capture the Flag’ in 1981, boys will be boys. By 1982 some of the entrepreneurial players from that ‘Capture the Flag’ game, started National Survival Games (NSG) and opening paint ball fields. Charles Gaines, founded NSG. PMI (Pursuit Marketing Inc.) was founded for the distribution and marketing of Paint Ball products and paint ball gear sites. Caleb Strong opened the first outdoor paintball gear site in 1982 in upstate New York. Being in upstate New York, Caleb also opened the first indoor paintball gear site in Buffalo in 1984.

The early marketing of the new sport included articles written by quite a few of those early players and published in Sports Illustrated and other sports genre.

Once established it was only natural to set up a Championship Contest. This was done in 1983 at a paint ball gear site with a purse of $14,000 cash. The sport also went international in 1983 with the opening of an outdoor paintball gear site in Toronto.

More International Venues were added beginning with Australia in 1984, France and Denmark in 1991 with the rest of Europe soon to follow. An indoor paintball gear site was erected in England by 1985.

I’m sure quite a few Wives, Mothers and anyone who does their own laundry are grateful to George A. Skogg who in 1987 patented a “washable marking fluid formulation for soft gelatin capsules” - a Paintball bullet recipe (U.S. patent 4,634,606 granted January 6, 1987.) The fluid when packaged in a soft gelatin capsule produced projectiles that were more accurate and stable and made bright, highly visible marks that could be easily washed out with water and/or detergent and were ideally suitable for use in the sports and games exercises. Skogg worked for the Nelson Paint Company and this patent became the Nelson recipe for Paintballs.

LET’S GET ORGANIZED

In 1988 The IPPA (International Paintball Players Association) was founded. This is a non-profit association dedicated to the education, growth and safety of the sport of paintball. During the period 1992-1993 NPPL (National Professional Paintball League ) was founded and the NPPL Pro-Am Series began with paint ball gear site tournaments set up in Reno, New York, Boston, and other cities around the U.S..

It was inevitable that television would become involved. How could it ‘NOT’ be included. In 1993 ESPN aired it’s filming of the NPPL ‘DC Cup’ from Bowie, Maryland, organized by the PCRI (Paintball Ratings and Competitions International). As interest expanded in 1996 ESPN aired the ESPN World Championships of Paintball from Orlando, Florida.

And of course the Internet would become a venue. In 1994 Warpig introduced the first internet paintball gear site.

The game has exploded into a multimillion-dollar sport with amateur and professional tournaments across the United States and Europe. Paintball Gear Sites are opening every day now, all over the world. Cash purses and prizes in the hundreds of thousands of dollars are involved. Daisy (manufacturer of pellets, B.B.s and air guns), Crossman (manufacturer of airguns), Scott USA (manufacturer of ski poles and goggles) and JT USA (manufacturer of motocross safety equipment) are just a few of the companies that have expanded into paintball paraphernalia and equipment. Sponsors of modern tournaments include companies such as Budweiser and Pepsi-Cola and who know’s what’s next. (Toy’s r Us, Ruger).

How To Use Game Tables To Bridge The Generation Gap

February 8th, 2009
ping pong
Don Jacobson asked:

Close your eyes and imagine with me for a moment. Wait. Don’t close your eyes. (How else could you read this) Pretend that it’s Thanksgiving and all your family has gotten together. Your grandparents are there; your mom and dad, your sisters, their husbands and kids, your brother and his girlfriend, even your cousins and your favorite aunt and uncle have flown in from Cincinnati. Everyone is at your house, and all the preparations have come together. The house is beautiful, the turkey is in the oven, and you somehow managed to get the kids to clean up their rooms without shoving everything under their beds.

Dinner is a few hours away yet, and everyone is spreading out looking for things to do. Some opt for the Detroit game on TV; others head outdoors for their own version of the big game on the front lawn. But what about those who want to stay indoors and aren’t inclined to kick back and watch the game Set out a few board games, puzzles or simple crafts for those who might be interested in occupying their minds while distracting their stomachs. Another option might be showing off your new games table in the basement, garage, or spare room.

The great thing about games tables such as ping pong or air hockey tables is that almost anyone can play with one. As long as one can stand or sit and use the paddles to defend the goal, one can play. Age is not much of an obstacle. Anyone can participate. Get grandma and grandpa over to the table, and challenge them to a game with little 6-year-old Joey or Laney. Depending on the age of the grandparents, many kids this age are actually pretty equal physically when playing games such as air hockey. Not much skill is needed, just a bit of coordination.

Playing at a games table is a good way for a surly teen to be drawn into participating in the family activities. An uncle or aunt, grandparent or even one of mom or dad’s cousins could invite a teen to play a game. This can, in turn, draw the teen out a bit, making him or her more relaxed and thinking less of what else he or she would rather be doing.

Yes, it’s true, even the toughest of nuts to crack can be gotten out of their shell by getting involved in a friendly game of air hockey, table tennis, billiards or maybe foosball. This is also a great way to introduce new people to the family group. Your sister’s new boyfriend may be able to get to know your kids by playing with them at the games table. Your dad or mom might enjoy challenging this newcomer to a friendly game of air hockey; the movement of the game can help everyone relax a bit and learn more about each other.

Playing games together is a great way for members of every generation to spend time together and to get to know each other even better.
