Forrest Gump, Starring Tom Hanks - Pure Freedom

Patrick Roberts asked:

Regular people are bogged down with spiritual impurities. Even the smartest, most resourceful, most diligent people in the world can’t avoid the hindering effects of sin. But an innocent person is the freest sort of person. The movie Forrest Gump demonstrates the unrestrained quality of life that only a pure-hearted person can live.

Purity notices injustice and acts quickly. Gump noticed a man striking his friend, Jenny. Within seconds Gump was all over that man. Everyone in the room knew he was right despite all the racial tensions that clogged their minds.

Purity loves others extravagantly. Gump didn’t hesitate to run out to Jenny in front of all those people at the peace rally. In this way, his speech went unheard, but his actions spoke more powerfully than words. Gump loved his fellow soldiers with such an unconditional love that he went back in the jungle under bullets and bombs to save a half dozen of them. His love for his friend, Bubba, inspired him to go back in into the jungle in the first place.

Purity is dedicated. Gump didn’t just run; he ran faster than anyone else in college football. He didn’t just play ping pong; he won the world championship of ping pong. He didn’t just take a jog; he ran longer and further than anyone had ever heard of. He didn’t just clean and reassemble his gun faster than his friends; he did so faster than anyone in the company’s history.

Purity is unselfish. Gump risked his life for his friends. He stood up for Jenny. He watched out for Captain Dan. He gave half the value of his shrimping business Bubba’s family to honor their agreement.

Purity is honest. Gump amazed people with his unassuming honesty. He captivated passersby with his straightforward storytelling. Whenever he spoke, it tended to be purposeful and to the point. He told it like it is so well that he coined one of the most famous two-worded sentences ever, “S— happens.”

Special Event Videography - Top Tips for Filming Toddlers and Other Fierce Creatures

December 15th, 2008

Amanda Nella asked:

You have the perfect ending shot in your minds eye for the end of your special event family film. You are holding your camera at knee height and have Bobby the Toddler in your view finder. Two foot of obstinate intimidation. All you want him to do is run away from you to the tree and glance gleefully behind him as you chase him filming a toddler POV (point of view.) It will make a poignant and lovely ending to the film. Bobby, however, is standing with one hand on his hip and the other jammed up his nose to the second knuckle and is refusing to cooperate. “You have a big head” he notes as a matter of fact. Right, it’s getting personal. “Come on Bobby, show me if you can run to the tree.” You are starting to plead and that may be eroding your power base. Bobby notes the change in tactic and alters his psychological toddlercology accordingly. “I have a willy”. His eyes narrow, searching for the shock reaction that usually follows. Before this can predictably move on to the ‘what have you got’ conversation I review the golden rules for dealing with toddlers.

Engage the Toddler

Children are very quick to make friends, if you find the right common ground. From their perspective you are a stranger who has come into mummy and daddy’s home with a rather large camera and you are making all these demands, none of which make any sense. You are treating them as you would any film subject and attempting stage direction but this will not work. Start by introducing yourself. They are little people and fully aware of social niceties. Let them know what you are there to accomplish. Show them the camera, give them a quick tour of the more obvious features. Your flip out LCD display panel is about to become your best friend. Toddlers love nothing more than to see themselves. You will get great footage this way and also alleviate any fear factors as your camera has now become a large toy. Be sensitive that you are dealing with teeny tiny people who have all the standard emotions, fears and concerns, unfortunately without a filtering mechanism, control or the power of reason.

Personalise the Camera

I have in the past attempted to over personalise my camera. I gave it antenna and ping pong ball eyes. This was a sure fire hit with the kiddies but it caused external noise on the film and made me look quite daft. You don’t need to go this far. Give your camera a name, tell a little story about the films ‘Eric’ likes to take and some of the places he has been to shoot those films. If however you are dealing with a savvy Generation Z toddler, who has brutally honest parents, tell them that this is the Sony Z1 and ask his views on progressive filming versus interlaced.

Camera Games

Hide the Object If you want a toddler to go in a certain direction, give them a reason. Hide a toy and tell them to find it. Do it a couple of times before using the camera. Do not hide their favourite blue blanket that even mummy cannot touch or you will find your public liability getting a hammering for psychological damage.

Hide and Seek Get mum or dad to start this one off and then join in. If this is not a favorite get mum or dad to play the game that typifies fun for the family and film it as a participant. Wear flat shoes and use the smaller lighter battery.

Show me a Face Turn around the LCD panel and play ‘make that face’, these bits of film are adorable and make good transition shots between scenes.

You Scratch My Back..

Realistically, you will be shooting a large amount of film, and the balance of probabilities that you will get some useable footage. If however, the toddler is not going to cooperate on any level, bribery is your last resort. I sometimes ask parents of self proclaimed high need children, that if they wish they can consider an ‘encouragement’ gift. Prior to the shoot, they have the option of purchasing a toy that can be offered in exchange for helping mummy and daddy with the film. This is a one off and not going to cause Dr Spock to spin in his grave, or Dr Phil to frown and ask ‘What were you thinking??” If the toy is not required then it will make a nice gift for a job well done. Do not, repeat do not, attempt bribery without parental consent, toddlers should not eat confectionary and may have allergies you are not aware of. And if you offer an unsanctioned gift you will infuriate and alienate parents and possibly lose a client. At the end of the day, mum and dad know their toddler better than you and their guidance will be more valuable than sugar and bribery.

In the case of non-compliant Bobby and upon reflection of the golden rules I considered the odds of me winning this battle and with discretion being the better part of valor I conceded defeat to my better opponent and left it all in mum’s capable hands.

The Phoenix Mission Replaces Hollywood in Martian Exploration

December 10th, 2008

James William Smith asked:

Mars is a planet that has received considerable attention from Hollywood over the years. For decades, in the mid to late 20th century, Hollywood would produce movie after movie depicting Martians as little green men who were nasty Earth invaders. Sometimes men from Mars simply sported green face paint, but they almost always wore a jumpsuit of some type.

Occasionally, though, Martians were not small or green. In movies called “Flying Disc Man From Mars” (1950) and “Flight to Mars” (1951), Martians looked just like us. However, in a 1960s movie called “The Angry Red Planet.” there’s no shortage of scary Martian creatures. Martian Monsters included giant green bat-spiders, man-eating plants, amorphous slithering blobs with one eye, and three-eyed Martians with devil horns.

In “The War of the Worlds,” the classic 1898 H.G. Wells novel, invading Martians are described as having a quivering, V-shaped mouth, huge brains with tentacles, intense eyes, and an oily brown skin. Martians used robots for their manual labor.

In the 1953 movie, “Invaders From Mars,” Hollywood shows Martians for the first time in color. While the Martian Master is more akin to Wells’ literary creature, the workers are humanoid, with ping-pong eyeballs and three fingers. And they’re unique in their oversized hoodies with zippers running up the backs.

However, in the 1960s, television would provide a much more positive impression of Martians. In 1963, in the comedy series “My Favorite Martian”, lovable actor Ray Walston was only made distinct from humans by the retractable antennae sitting on top of his otherwise normal human head.

I was thinking about how all of this Hollywood science fiction and hype has shaped our thinking of Mars, as I watched the successful landing of NASA’s robotic spaceship on the planet’s surface the other day. I wondered if the late 20th century Hollywood science fiction writers could ever imagine a day when a spacecraft from Earth would actually enter the Martian atmosphere. They could certainly never envision a spaceship that would be traveling at a speed of 13,000 miles per hour just seven short minutes before actually landing on a planned spot on the Martian surface.

In fact the entry into Mars’ atmosphere and landing on the planet’s surface were thought to be the most dangerous part of the Phoenix mission by NASA scientists. However, the spacecraft would land perfectly in the Vastitas Borealis Plains within the Martian Arctic Circle. This mission had been planned since the Mars Odyssey detected frozen water below the planet’s surface in 2002. The Phoenix Mars landing is at a latitude comparable to that of northern Alaska on Earth.

The purpose of the Phoenix mission is to discover not only the history of the planet’s water and ice, but also whether the region could support microbial life. Crucial to this question will be tests for complex, carbon-based chemicals (organics) in the soil and signs that the ice periodically melts. Other soil tests will determine abundances of different minerals, and the laboratory will also subject dust grains to microscopic examination.

Phoenix will be stationary for three months on Mars as it carries out these scientific operations on the planet’s surface. Phoenix’s stereo camera, located on its 2-meter (6.6-foot) mast, will use two “eyes” to reveal a high-resolution perspective of the landing site’s geology. It will also provide range maps for use in choosing where to dig. Multi-spectral capability will enable the identification of local minerals.

The solar-powered craft will deploy a robotic arm to dig down vertically through the soil toward the planet’s icy crust. The arm was designed to deliver samples of Martian soil to the spacecraft’s wet chemistry lab and tiny ovens for scientific analysis. The samples will be heated to release volatiles that can be examined for their chemical composition and other characteristics. One goal is to check whether subsurface samples hold carbon-containing compounds that are essential ingredients of life.

To increase scientific understanding of Martian atmospheric processes, Phoenix will scan the atmosphere up to twelve miles in altitude, obtaining data about the formation, duration, and movement of clouds, fog, and dust plumes. It also carries temperature and pressure sensors.

A better understanding of Mars is important to scientists since the planet is a primary long-term target for human exploration. Current plans are for a colonization of the Moon by NASA during the next decade. An outpost on the lunar surface would make a future launch of a manned spacecraft to Mars a distinct possibility in the decades that follow.

The next ninety days will determine the ultimate success of the first robotic spacecraft to land on Mars in over a decade. The Phoenix will surely become a trailblazer for future missions that will continue to explore the planet‘s surface. As far as all those movies about little green men and other creatures from Mars are concerned, real science is now about to replace science fiction. Indeed, NASA’s Phoenix spacecraft has arrived on the surface of Mars. Its arrival marks the end of Martians as portrayed in Hollywood fiction.
