Video Gaming Is Not a Couch Potato Sport Anymore

May 1st, 2009
video games
Jay Brandley asked:

Many people think that video games are not a healthy recreational hobby for children, or anyone for that matter. Video games are associated with television binging and being a couch potato. Being sedentary is not a healthy lifestyle. However, the gaming and video game console scene is changing and incorporating a much larger measure of physical activity and exertion more than ever before. Let us consider some gaming examples that support the statement that video gaming is not a couch potato sport anymore. Yes, there is an uprising in the making. The twenty first century has spawned a new wave of gaming concepts. Physical activity and video games are merging, thus making it a bit more appealing to those who are aware and conscious of their health.

Movement and Video Games

There exists certain video games that require more than sitting down and pressing buttons with your hands while your eyes are fastened tight to the television screen. It is becoming a trend these days for children to become couch potatoes. These children stay at home a lot and sit for hours in front of the television or computer. However, because of the stressing of the importance of physical exercise, gaming has been slowly being reinvented with exercise in mind.

For instance, take the video game Dance Dance Revolution. This video game requires a complimenting dance pad where players are required to jump and move and land on certain parts of the dance pad according to what the directions are on the screen to get points to win. This game requires constant motion and movement, so players are not sitting down but rather they are getting some physical activity.

To add to this, the Nintendo Wii uses sensory technology and incorporates it into their new concept of video gaming. All video games require motion and reenactment on the part of the players, and therefore these players are also constantly in motion.

Although just playing video games that require physical movement is not enough to keep a person healthy, it is a great step towards making exercise fun, and curing the debilitating couch potato disease. In a way, video games that require movement is a really great disguise for physical exertion and a great way to get your kids to be a little more active than usual. And it is not just for kids, because although many adults will not admit it, they enjoy video games just as much, if not more, than kids. So take a small but focused step towards getting yourself healthy and substitute your traditional couch potato gaming for video games that require movement.

Video Games Are Not Bad For Children

April 15th, 2009
video games
Jay Brandley asked:

Many people seem to think that video games are bad for children to play. This is not an entirely true statement. There is a proper time and place for all activities. As with every other activity, video games and gaming, when played in balance, can be both fun and healthy for children.

However, many activities have both positive and negative contributing factors, and video games are no exception to the rule. Let us discuss some of those factors. If we can acquire or maintain a healthy and balanced view of video games, perhaps a compromise can be made from both child and parent concerning this subject.

Monitor The Type Of Video Game Being Played

Action video games may contain a good amount of violence that may not be suitable for children. However, not all video games contain violence. Some video games are actually quite educational and can be very healthy as it could quite possibly stimulate a good amount of mental activity in the brain of your child.

Monitoring and screening the video games that are being played by your children could help solve this dilemma. You may even want to sit down with your children and play the video games with them so that you can get more involved in what games your children are playing.

Set A Time Limit

If you are worried about your child playing too much video games, setting a time limit or an allotted time each day that he are she is allowed to play could help. As children do need limits and boundaries, this could assist you in getting your child to realize what healthy time amounts of gaming are. When he or she is allowed to play video games for only a certain amount of time, they will get used to to this schedule and will eventually come up with other things to do after.

Use Video Game Playing As A Reward

You can use time for video games as a reward for either good behavior, the completion of tasks and chores, or whatever you please. By using video games as a reward, you can teach your child, or children if you have more than one, the value of time and purchased objects. You will also be able to teach them that recreation or entertainment is a privilege that can be attained by hard work. You will, in effect, be preparing them for what is to come later on in life.

So, do not so easily cross off video games as a terrible method of entertainment for kids. Be balanced, and teach your child how to be balanced also.

Popularity Of Flash Arcades

April 8th, 2009
arcade
Alan Biron asked:

Flash Arcades have gotten increasingly more popular over the years, yet some curious people keep asking “Why?” Well, for starters, it isn’t just kids playing these games, which is a huge paradox to popular belief about flash games. People of all ages play these games, from around age four to age 100, there are flash games suitable for all ages, which makes Flash Arcades sure fire hits for everyone with any sort of free time.

The main part of Flash Arcades’ popularity is the sheer variety of games offered at these websites. If I want to play a beat ‘em up game, I can. If I want to play a 2D scrolling space shooter, I can. If I want to joust George W. Bush against John Kerry, I can. If I want to play some Basketball, I can. If I want to challenge my brain, I can even do that too. So, there’s games for all occasions, even holidays, and games for all ages, as mentioned earlier.

Another humongous part of Flash Arcades’ success has been due to the fact that the potential game players need not install anything on their computers. It’s just load and play, and if you do not like the game, no problem, because you don’t have to uninstall anything either, just hit the back arrow and move on the the next game. Flash games don’t care what platform you are running on either. Whether you use Windows, Mac, or Linux, you can run and play flash games the same on all systems.

Addicictive has been a word heard many times when describing flash games, and it is rightfully used. Many of the games found in Flash Arcades can just eat time away, and make players want to keep at them until they beat the games. These games keep people coming back, and coming back, and back again because they are fun, and people love how they can just type in an address in their browser, click a couple of times and play the game from any computer that is connected to the internet without downloading or installing anything. This also means they can play their favorite games at school, home, work, or wherever.

New to Flash Games has been Multiplayer Online games, such as Club Penguin, where players can basically play an MMO in a Flash Game. Flash games have shown in the past, and are still showing that they can grow in complexity and innovate almost at the rate of, but slightly slower than regular video games. The 2D Tile-Based Puzzle Games of the past gave way to Platformers, which gave way to a vast variety of other 2D games, which spouted the new MMO flash games, and now we are even starting to see 3D games come out in Flash Arcades. Soon enough, there will be solid and polished 3D games available in Flash Arcades, which will make them the ultimate websites to own and visit.

Classic Arcade Games At Home?

April 5th, 2009
arcade games
Greg Lucas asked:

Some people like to unwind by listening to music, some like to watch TV, some like to indulge in a little baking, and some like to play in the Arcades.

Those people who belong to the first three categories are lucky because the radio, the television, and the oven could be found in the comfort of their own homes.

The same couldn’t be said for the guy who likes to play in the Arcade though as the nearest Arcade is probably blocks away. And due to the dwindling popularity of the Arcades, their numbers have dropped as well.

But, as is the case with almost everything else in our modern world, technology has made it easier for the Arcade Buff. Your favorite arcade games like Pac-Man, Pinball, and Space Invaders can now be played in the comfort of your own home all for free.

You don’t have to buy those bulky Arcade Machines. The solution is actually more practical. You only have to go to your desk, open the computer, connect to the Internet, and go to one of those on-line Arcades. Nobody has to see you struggling over that unbeatable stage in Super Mario.

Nobody has to see you fumble with the controls as you try to outrun the enemies in Pac-man. Nobody has to hear that booming voice shout “Game Over”. You can do it all in the comfort and privacy of your own home. No more humiliating defeats, no more annoying bystanders whispering that they can do better, no more waiting in line to buy tokens. Indeed, the on-line arcade has made things extremely better for the modern gamer.

Online arcades also offer a bigger variety of games than your local arcade. There are over a million arcade games in the Internet, a number made possible by the emergence of different versions of different games.

These on-line games, ranging from puzzle games to shooting games to word games, have even become more complex, more interesting, and more addictive. Pac-man, a traditionally two dimensional game has evolved into a full three dimensional game, where our hero, Pac-man has changed from a mere circle to a 3-d sphere with legs and arms, and an interesting personality to boot.

Modern Technology has made things easier for the modern man. If you’re too busy to go to the actual Arcades, you can still indulge yourself in the Internet without having to leave your home and and play free arcade games.

How The Games Of Today Give Us A Glimpse Of Future Gaming Technology

April 1st, 2009
virtual games
Gregg Hall asked:

I think games in the future will be even more realistic then the games we already have with our Xbox 360s and Play Station 3s. Microsoft and Sony will more than likely come out with something even more insane like a virtual game or something and that would be the game of the century. To have a virtual game that you put on but still used an Xbox or Play Station and you played shooting games like you play online today. I think that would be the best game to come out ever.

If you just thought about what we have now and just think about we will have in the future you should be amazed because with graphics and games getting so much more finer in quality and look it going to be a good future.

Just like I said about the virtual game thing you could have that same idea but have just sunglasses to put on and you see everything through the lenses. That would be a lightweight piece to put on yet a whole big bang of game, if you just had that and an Xbox you would be set for playing online. That would be a whole new online experience for most gamers. I wouldn’t think that anyone had ever seen anything like that before.

Also people are suggesting that they would like to be able to speak with characters from the game. The whole point of the game is to play not talk is what I think. I think if you want to talk you need to get online and play a game like Counterstrike or Day of Defeat or maybe get on Xbox live and do some Gears of War or Halo 3. That’s the type of games that you should want to talk on or to. If you ever go online you will see people talking online a lot and that might motivate you to get involved. It’s a lot better to want to talk to other people online then talk to a character in a game that is made to answer questions that you are going to ask unless it has a brain and can speak and think on its own. I don’t think something like that would come out for at least another hundred years.

If you are the one to talk then you should just go online or get an Xbox and an Xbox live account and get started playing shooting games online or play some type of role playing game. That’s if you want to talk in the game that you are playing. You can still not talk and play online or on any other game. I think playing games online like Madden and sports games are fun and you don’t have to talk with other people. Most people do like the idea of being able to talk with each other especially since you can talk with people from all over the world. I don’t see why someone would want to talk with a game character in a game.

Japanese Nintendo Wii Games Offer More Gaming Selection And Choices For The Slow Summer Months

March 29th, 2009
nintendo wii
Steven Fields asked:

As seems to be the nature of things in video game releases, the summer time is almost always the slowest time of year. It’s been this way since the days of the Super Nintendo system (and the corresponding system from Sega, the Genesis). The trend looks to continue this year with the Nintendo Wii. So what is an avid gamer to do once they’ve finished all of the current games in their collection?

While many games often have great replay value, playing it on a different difficulty setting, or playing it in two player mode with a friend. We’re often left wanting an waiting in the summer time for new game releases. Going to your local Blockbuster or EBGames to buy another new game is simply not an option.

This is where import games come into play. While state side we’ve run out of games to buy (and play) and wanting for more, there are a whole slew of games being released (or games that have already been released) in Japan and Europe, that are sure to keep you busy during the slow summer months here in the USA and Canada. You can certainly keep yourself busy and playing without having to rely on the release dates for games here in North America. And while we can safely assume that all games from England and Europe are multi-lingual, meaning that they have an English option available. Even many of the Japanese games that have been released offer a full gaming experience simply because many of the prompts, words, information screens are all in English.

It’s important for me to point out however that even with all of these great games coming out in Japan and Europe while we’re dealing with the slow down in game released here in North America, you can’t just pop these games into your Nintendo Wii and expect them to load. You’ll need a Nintendo Wii Mod chip like the Wiikey or the Cyclowiz> or one of the many other Wii Modchips on the market today. This is because the Nintendo Wii, like the Playstation 2 and Gamecube before it, has region coding on their games. Much like a DVD movie that is meant to play in a certain region of the world, video games are also the same. So if you want to play a Japanese game on your North American or European Nintendo Wii, you simply won’t be able to do it without a mod chip.

With all of the mod chips on the market now for the Nintendo Wii, you’ll have no problem picking on that’s suitable for you, and being able to play it right away. Don’t be afraid of installing a mod chip, they are easy to do, and require fairly little skill as far as soldering goes. You won’t regret the 20 - 30 minutes it’ll take you to install it - the rewards are far to great. Being able to expand your software library by hundreds of games right after you install your Nintendo Wii Modchip.

Konami, Hudson and Tecmo are preparing new games to be released on the Nintendo Wii in Japan. These game are slated for release in either June or July. here are just a few of the many Nintendo Wii Import Games you could soon be playing.

First to the plate (okay, the pun IS intended) is Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball Wii. This big headed baseball game from Konami is similar to the PS2 Version that is available already. The Wii version will however have an exclusive “REMO PAWA” (remote power) mode where you would use the Wiimote to swing and pitch the ball, making for a truly interactive game experience. On a side note, I have always thought that sports games would benefit the most from the way we play games on the Nintendo Wii - and this game shows that perhaps I may have been right. The release date is July 19th for this game.

The next game will be an action game from Tecmo. Though no details have as yet been released for this game, it is, as said by the famous Famitsu game magazine in Japan, a good, and much needed action game for the Nintendo Wii. While it may seem a but mysterious that there aren’t any additional details, this is often common in Japan - even when the game is just a month from being released.

And finally, the last of the the games in this article is a jigsaw puzzle game (yes, jigsaw puzzles on the Wii CAN be fun you know!). Entitled Jigsaw Puzzle Kyou no Wanko, which roughly translates to Jigsaw Puzzle: Today’s Dog in English. This game features jigsaw puzzles based around the popular (in Japan anyway) Kyou no Wanko segment that airs early mornings on Fuji Television in Japan. While it may not be your next first person shooter - it can offer several hours of party fun with your friends and family (and a great way to show your parents that you’re actually using your brain while playing a game too). The release date for this game is set at July 29th.

Arcade Racing Games

March 29th, 2009
arcade
Craig Rad asked:

In the diverse world of PC racing games and Internet racing games you will find racing games off all types involving all different kinds of vehicles and taking place on any terrain in any kind of weather conditions. Auto games may take you and the vehicle of your choice on road to reach the highest speed and win the race or off road to complete the most dangerous and rocky courses and win points.

The world of arcade games, although not as diverse as the world of Internet racing games we know today, always had a great deal to offer to the impassioned player. Arcade racing games like Ridge Racer, Virtua Racing, and Indianapolis 500: The Simulation, Out Run or Gran Track 10 made racing game history long before the personal computer and the Internet became regular parts of our lives. The development of arcade racing games made possible the growth and diversity of the Internet racing games we know today.

The first game to put the player on an actual racing circuit with a time limit and artificially intelligent cars as opponents was Pole Position released by Namco in 1982. Although it was rather limited because of the reduced hardware capabilities this game gained a lot of fans and contributed to the development of subsequent more complex arcade games.

A more impressive 2D game with upgraded graphics was Out Run, released by Sega in 1986, and less than one year later, the first multiple player game, Final Lap, was in the arcades. At that point 3D graphics arcade racing games were only a few years away. Hard Drivin’ released in 1989 by Atari introduced the force feedback wheel that responds when you take faster turns or harder turns, a camera that replays your most impressive crashes and, of course, 3D graphics.

The first of the arcade racing games that was actually acclaimed for its complexity and accuracy was Indianapolis 500: The Simulation. Aside from the 3D graphics already expected from a high quality racing game the Indianapolis 500 featured handling, car failures, setup options and the exact replica of the famous racing circuit bearing the same name. It paved the way for other games simulating real racing circuits like World Circuit by Simergy which re-created all the circuits and cars from the 1991 Formula 1 World Championship or Daytona USA released by Sega in 1994.

A combination of game play and driving became popular in the world of arcade games towards the end of the nineties, when games like Midtown Madness or Crazy Taxi would have the player complete tasks in a limited amount of time and using different types of vehicles.

Even though it was not as developed as the world of Internet racing games, the world of arcade type games showed great creativity and provided the player with hours of driving fun.

Want to Improve on your Dexterity, Linear Thinking, and Coordination? Go for Video Game

March 25th, 2009

Muna wa Wanjiru asked:

The word is that video games are more than just addicting toys that keep people from being responsible, productive members of society, have them cutting school, see them skipping work (or playing video games AT work), or turn them into violent war-mongers within weeks of playing the latest Doom or Laura Tomb Raider or Black and White or Myst.

I watched a show the other night that covered the shootings by two eleven year-olds of students and teachers at a remote grade school in Arkansas, I think it was. (The shootings at schools, by the way, have reportedly occurred only in small towns where guns were not an issue but a tool for sport and subsistence hunting.) The theory of too much influence on the part of video games was included in this hour-long documentary, as were the theories that pointed to music, the parents, and the social construct at large. But the emphasis on video games as culprit was focused on the violent games that reward violence. Not once did any “expert” speak to the middle eastern countries where for centuries they had no video games, didn’t have TV, computers, didn’t even have electricity, if you will…yet have slaughtered each other in decade- and century-long battles over whose god says whose land it is.

I digress. The benefits of video games are addressed. Games that require dexterity, linear thinking, and that make other complex demands on coordination, eyes, and the brain have been considered positive in the staving off of such progressive illnesses as Alzheimer’s.

Kids today get video games in the classroom, as auxiliary materials, or in learning environments after school that are designed based on the rationale that video games can help with skills such as the following:

Memorizing and remembering (intake and recall of information)

Inducing and deducing (critical thinking)

Recognizing patterns, solving problems, and mapping (organization and reasoning)

Video games also contribute to perseverance skills; socialization skills (simulating, as many games do, leadership, rule-following, and hierarchical ordering); motor skills; and assist in assuaging the difficulties and challenges of such disorders as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and helping elevate esteem and increase motivation and drive.

So I don’t know about you, but as a child of the decade when the first video game appeared, Pong, I never finished playing and went out into the world with the desire to whack someone ups side the head with a ping pong paddle. They say smart people play video games all the time and don’t, of course, use the activity as an excuse to kill. In fact, these people don’t kill. They are more likely busy competing online or too engrossed in the challenge of reaching their personal best…
